Example Module 1
The first module is designed to help set some context and build an understanding of the format of each of the subsequent modules.
The title is: Trust in the 21st Century Workplace. Trust is a fundamental quality which all other transformational soft skills can be related and, as we will discuss, is the fundamental deficit that damages teamwork.
The content of Module 1 is:
- Understanding how humans can be as considered ‘system elements’
- The workplace dynamics in the 20th Century
- Understanding the historical drivers for change
- The workplace dynamics in the 21st Century
- Understanding the role that trust plays in the workplace
- Understanding what trust is and its dynamics (how to create it and how fragile it is)
- Taking a systems point of view to analyse systems that include humans
- Using trust in communications
- Using trust in creating teams
- Measuring trust
- Designing an experiment to learn more about trust
- Discussing the simple homework assignment for the next module
- Wellbeing takeaway
- Background reading/video

FAQ's
What you can expect from the programme
Will I always have access to the course?
Yes! Once enrolled for the course you'll always have access. This means that you’ll also have access to the course as we continue to upgrade and improve our lessons over time.
I don't have a STEM degree, is this ok?
Although SE is an engineering discipline, it's about developing products. Be it systems, software or physical products, as long as you follow the method, you will achieve results. STEM graduates may have slight exposure to 'systems development' but anyone with the right mindset can become a Systems Engineer.
Is there a certificate of completion for the Systems Engineering Nanodegree?
Yes, once your deliverables have been submitted and signed off, we will issue a completion certificate!
What does it mean to be part of a cohort?
LEAP has been designed to work with cohorts of people. Although much of the learning will be online, there will be face to face workshops throughout the programme. The aim is to build the members of the cohort into a self-forming professional support network where the skills being learnt, and the project challenges being tackled, can be discussed in a knowledgeable, supporting, and engaging environment. LEAP is designed to share knowledge but also to use that knowledge within the programme itself.
Who will I be employed by?
If successful securing a place on the LEAP programme you will receive a contract for 2 years and 2 weeks covering the full programme. For this period your contract will be with Matchtech. At the end of the LEAP programme, you will receive a permanent employment contract with Leonardo.
How often will I get paid?
You will be paid weekly, every Friday.
How do I get paid?
You will complete an online timesheet with your hours worked, which your manager at Leonardo will approve for payment.
Do I get a pension?
Yes, you will automatically be opted into a pension scheme for the full LEAP programme duration.
How many days holiday do I get?
25 days + Bank Holidays.
What if Leonardo don’t offer me a job at the end of it?
Leonardo have a sustained demand for increasing their Systems Engineering teams with many years worth of work already secured so we don’t envisage any situation where if you complete the programme there isn’t permanent employment with Leonardo at the end. However, if this did happen, you have two very valuable years experience as a Systems Engineer and we would support you to secure employment at one of the many other companies with Systems Engineering vacancies.
How are candidates screened by Leonardo?
Initially this will be by reviewing your CV, notes from your conversation with Rachel and your answers to a scenario-based question. They will evaluate your transferrable skills and your approach to the problem in the scenario to decide how they progress.
What Grade/Level will I be at when I complete the LEAP Programme?
To be determined by Leonardo, but based on your knowledge of your levels, it is likely candidates will graduate into a permanent role with Leonardo at your grade 4 or 5.
Will I get to choose which project I work on?
Leonardo have a range of projects you could be working on. The managers will evaluate your skills and experience to decide which project will be best suited for you. This may change during the programme and you will have the opportunity to share preferences with your line manager on this.
What on-the-job support will I get?
Leonardo have so many great and experienced Systems Engineers and Managers who will be there to support you at every step. Whether it be a specific task or more generally, support will always be on hand.
Testimonial of a Leonardo Employee
“When I left the Army, I was fortunate enough to have had top level of exposure to Systems Engineering though my computing degree, with its introduction to requirements writing, a critical factor for success, and the software development lifecycle. Ultimately, I would not be in the position I am now without that exposure and the personal professional recognition it gave me. I did plenty of CPD courses, but definitely wish that the LEAP Programme had existed then, maybe I'd have got where I am quicker.
It took me a while after leaving to get where I am, but working for Leonardo I’m probably the happiest I’ve been since I left the regular Army. I am now a Project Systems Engineering Lead and the Project Engineering Manager, I am responsible for the Systems Engineering artefacts existence and maturity, the fundamental building blocks on the technical direction of the project and how the largest cohort of engineers work to design the system. It’s busy and challenging, and ultimately unworkable without the right kind of support that I receive at Leonardo. It’s important to note that the grass isn’t greener on the other side, it’s greener where you nurture it.”
