Let's talk about competency questions: what to expect

Competency-based questions

These are common practice in job interviews - they will typically ask you to share an example, that will demonstrate a skill or behaviour that is relevant to the job opportunity.

These questions can cover a varied range of topics depending on the position, including things like teamwork, self-motivation, communication, decision making, leadership, problem solving, dealing with conflict, mentoring others, budget management, client management, and so on.

The STAR technique

The STAR technique can help you to shape your competency answers, and give a clear, structured response.

  • Situation - set the scene, what was the challenge/circumstance?
  • Task - what needed to happen to fix the challenge? What was the end goal?
  • Action - what steps did you take? Focus on things you did specifically - "I" rather than "we"
  • Result - what happened in the end? What did you learn? Could anything have been done different?
